Social Media Tips For The Festive Season

With the festive season just around the corner, it’s likely that your business is either slowing down in time for holidays, or ramping up for your busiest time of year. Either way, it’s tempting to let your social media run on autopilot or ignore it completely until the New Year. But going quiet over Christmas means you could miss out on some great opportunities to connect and engage with your audience.

People tend to spend more time on social media at this time of year, so why not make the most of it with these tips for maintaining your social media presence over the holidays.

Start early

There’s no need to wait until Christmas day to create buzz around the holidays. Start now by sharing useful information that will help your fans prepare for the silly season. You may like to let them know when your office will be closed, or remind them about extended trading hours for last-minute purchases. Share gift ideas for those hard-to-buy-for family members, or your latest menu with details on how to book Christmas and New Year’s events. By thinking about what people need at this time of year, you’re adding value and will be top of mind when they’re ready to buy.

Lighten up

Although we recommend you have some form of social media presence over the holidays, you can reduce the amount of content you produce and make it lighter and more social. Get into the holiday mood by producing posts that are relevant to Christmas but still align to your products and services. For example, an accounting firm could share a joke about Santa’s budget, while a fashion brand may ask what everyone’s planning to wear on New Year’s Eve.

You can also embrace the Christmas spirit by changing your background or profile images to something more festive, or create special offers to thank your social media community for their support.

Build engagement

The festive season is a great conversation starter, so don’t be afraid to chat with your community and engage them on a more personal level. Topics such as holidays, parties and New Year’s resolutions are a great way to learn more about your customers and boost their engagement on your page.

You can also increase engagement by giving fans a behind-the-scenes look at your business, such as a photo of your Christmas party, factory staff working hard to get those gifts delivered in time or simply some office fun. Sharing the day-to-day of your business will give fans a glimpse into your personality and business culture, which can help build trust in your brand.

Ensure your content (including social content on your business profiles) is aligned to your business values, vision and goals. Be intentional about everything you post and share with your audience on social media.

Don’t sell too hard

Although everyone is in shopping mode, don’t forget to maintain a nice balance between sales and genuine conversation. If your community is engaged in a conversation with you, they’ll be more likely to buy than someone who sees your advertising and decides to keep scrolling.

Of course, if you’re going away or logging off over the Christmas break, scheduling posts in advance is the way to go. That way, you’ll maintain some momentum and avoid missing out on capturing people’s attention during this wonderful time of year.
