Should You Outsource Your Social Media?

The focus on social media as a way to build relationships with customers causes many business owners to throw up their hands in frustration at ‘one more thing’ they need to do every day.

Which is why outsourcing your social media management can seem like a sensible solution. Not only does it give you more time to focus on other areas of your business, but it can also reduce the need to keep up with the ever-changing nature of technology.

An experienced social media manager can develop a long-term strategy that will help you connect and build relationships with your audience, as well as handle any issues that arise before they get out of control.

Of course, that doesn’t mean you should hand over the management of your social media accounts to just anyone. If you’re thinking of outsourcing, keep these considerations in mind:

  1. Your social media manager is the voice of your business, so they need to spend a considerable amount of time getting to know you and your staff, clients, products and services. If they don’t, think carefully about whether you want them representing you online.

  2. The company you use should have the skills and experience to develop your brand by subtly sharing your vision and values in an engaging way.

  3. Online, the only tools you have to show your tone and style are the words, images and videos you use. Ensure the company you are outsourcing to has a good understanding of your brand’s official tone of voice and style guide, so it’s consistent across every aspect of your business.

  4. Has your social media manager worked with you to develop key messages? They should. Your key messages lie at the heart of every piece of communication to customers, so they should be well defined and regularly reviewed.

  5. Even if you outsource, it’s important that you stay across what’s happening on your social media channels and drop in from time to time. This adds a personal touch and a ‘behind the scenes’ element to your social networks. It’s definitely not something you can set and forget.
